An internal exam allows us to assess the muscles of the pelvic floor that attach from the front, back and sides of the pelvic bones and sacrum. These muscles surround structures such as the urethra, anus, as well as the vagina and/or penis.

  • By performing an internal exam, we can learn more information about things such as the strength & tone of the muscles, identify organ prolapse or scar tissue present, ensure reflexes in this area are functioning properly, and help identify your ability to relax and contract these muscles when cued. These exams can be completed vaginally and/or rectally.
  • We are always respectful of the sensitive nature of these exams, and ensure to educate you that this is not a requirement for treatment, but is suggested only when it is felt that the information would prove beneficial for your individual concerns. Only after having an informed conversation with the patient, and receiving consent do we continue with an internal exam. The treatment goals often change with patients session to session, and this is always re-evaluated meaning that not every appointment requires an internal exam. Consent will always be gained at every appointment, and the patient always maintains the right to withdraw this consent at any time.
