This is very Therapist and Client dependent – based on knowledge, education, comfortability, and trust; however, there is no evidence showing that massage or any touch therapy (Acupuncture, Chiro etc.) has influence on pregnancy or a gestating fetus in a negative way. What we do know, is that once you pass your first trimester your pregnancy becomes more viable. We know that miscarriages are not uncommon, and 80% of miscarriages happen in the first trimester, so when someone experiences a loss, grief can be heavy and most people will try to find a reason “why” something like that could have happened. If you had a massage a few days prior to your loss, your head might go there, and this is why a lot of RMT’s don’t feel comfortable treating women in their first trimester. Making an informed choice is the most important of all – if you know all of this information and feel safe moving forward with early pregnancy massage, then it’s safe to do. If you feel like it would stress or worry you, then early pregnancy massage is not safe for you to do.
