While this is a cute saying, it can be dangerous for an infant’s nutritional status. Iron becomes a very important nutrient around 6 months of life. An infant’s iron-stores are depleted by then and need an external source; iron can come from iron-fortified cereals, animal proteins (beef, chicken etc.) and/or plant-based proteins (soy, beans, lentils etc.). Over the course of a lifetime, the highest need for iron happens between month 6 and month 12 of life. So while feeding our children should be fun and without pressure, there is a reason to emphasize iron-rich foods and ensuring your child has good exposure to flavours and textures in the first year of life.
